Castle Rushen High School

Care, Quality, Opportunity

It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Harry Taverner.

Mr. Taverner was appointed Headteacher of CRHS in 1976 and worked tirelessly for the school for over 22 years until 1998.

As the third Headteacher in the history of CRHS he took over a school of just over 700 pupils and saw the implementation of GCSEs and National Curriculum changes and a considerable increase in pupil numbers to over 900.

His greatest fear was that the bureaucratic approach to school administration was in danger of damaging the relationship-based approach of teaching and learning, which he strongly believed in.

He is remembered fondly by staff, parents and students and has long retained the respect of those he worked with across the educational sector.

He received the OBE for services to education in 1999.

Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
